Nutritious Meals on a Budget Your Children Will Love: What You Can Do with a $50 Grocery Haul

July 2, 2025

Feeding your family healthy meals doesn’t have to cost a lot. With food prices going up, many caregivers are looking for ways to stretch their grocery budget while still putting tasty, kid-approved meals on the table. Here’s how to turn a $50 grocery haul into simple, nutritious meals for your family and how Imagine Pediatrics can help if you ever need extra support.

$50 Grocery List:

These items can usually be found for under $50 total, depending on where you shop. Many are also WIC- and SNAP-approved!

  • 1 bag of brown rice
  • 1 pack of whole wheat tortillas
  • 1 bag of dried garbanzo beans (chickpeas)
  • 1 can of black beans
  • 1 can of corn
  • 1 bag of baby carrots
  • 1 bag of frozen mixed veggies
  • 1 bunch of bananas
  • 1 jar of peanut butter
  • 1 dozen eggs (if affordable) or egg alternative (see below)
  • 1 loaf of whole wheat bread
  • 1 block of cheddar cheese
  • 1 tub of plain yogurt
  • 1 jar of salsa
  • 1 bag of oats
  • 1 carton of milk or non-dairy milk
  • 1 bag of apples
  • 1 pack of chicken thighs or canned chicken

Tip: Buying store brands and shopping at discount stores can help you save even more!

Simple Meals Kids Will Eat

1. Chickpea Tacos
Mash cooked garbanzo beans with salsa and a little cheese. Spoon into tortillas and serve with carrots or frozen veggies on the side.

2. Breakfast-for-Dinner Oat Bowls
Top oats with peanut butter, banana slices, and a drizzle of yogurt. A warm and filling meal any time of day!

3. Rice and Veggie Bowls
Mix rice with frozen veggies and a bit of cheese or chicken. Add a splash of salsa for flavor.

4. Grilled Cheese & Apple Slices
Make grilled cheese sandwiches using whole wheat bread and cheddar. Serve with a sliced apple on the side.

5. Yogurt Parfaits
Layer yogurt with oats, fruit, and peanut butter. It feels like a treat and is a healthy breakfast!

Smart Swaps When Eggs Are Expensive

If eggs are too pricey, try these easy swaps:

  • Mashed bananas (¼ cup = 1 egg) – great in pancakes or baked goods
  • Applesauce (¼ cup = 1 egg) – makes baked treats soft and sweet
  • Flaxseed (1 tbsp ground flax + 2 tbsp warm water, let sit for 5 min = 1 egg) – perfect for baking
  • Chia seeds (1 tbsp chia + 3 tbsp water = 1 egg) – works well in muffins and waffles
  • Garbanzo beans – mash and use as a protein swap in meals like stir fry or wraps
