
Understanding and Supporting Your Child’s Anxiety

What Is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a feeling of worry or fear. Everyone feels anxious sometimes—even children. It can show up as a stomachache, fast heartbeat, or feeling like something bad might happen. It’s important to let your child know this feeling is normal.
Let Your Child Know You’re There
Your child may not always have the words to explain their feelings. That’s okay. You can say things like, “It’s okay to feel scared. I’m here for you.” This helps your child feel safe and loved.
Create a Calm and Safe Space
Try setting up a quiet corner at home with soft pillows, favorite books, or fidget toys. This can be a special “calming space” where your child can go when they need a break or are feeling overwhelmed.
Watch for Signs of Anxiety
Anxiety can look different for every child. Some kids may cry more, feel sick often, or get angry easily. Others may become very quiet. Try to notice when these changes happen and talk with your child about what they are feeling.
Notice What Causes Anxiety
Some kids feel anxious in big crowds, loud places, or when trying something new. Once you figure out what causes anxiety, you can work with your child to feel more prepared and less scared.
Be a Calm Example
Children learn by watching. If you feel anxious, take a deep breath and talk about what helps you. When you manage your own feelings in healthy ways, your child learns to do the same.
