Tips for IEP and 504 Meetings for Families

Dec 31, 2026

Preparing for an IEP or 504 meeting can feel intimidating, even for families who’ve been through the process before. These meetings are important moments to make sure your child’s needs are understood and supported, so having a clear plan going in can help you feel more confident and organized. We offer tips to help families communicate effectively, stay focused on their child’s goals, and get the most out of each meeting.

At Imagine Pediatrics, we’re here to support you 24/7. We provide medical, mental health, and social care and support for children and adolescents with special health care needs. Day or night. Right from home. We can help you find specialists, complete paperwork, refill prescriptions, help with school planning, and much more.

Tips for families during IEP and 504 Meetings:

  • Bring someone with you (a friend, family member, or advocate).
  • Write down questions ahead of time.
  • You know your child best, speak up and share what’s working and what’s not.
  • Take notes and ask for a copy of anything the team discusses.
  • Don’t sign the IEP or 504 Plan if you do not agree with it or do not understand it.

If a plan isn’t working during the school year, you don’t have to wait until next year. You can ask for a meeting at any time.
